Automation and Artificial Intelligence in the logistics sector

The adoption of new technologies continues to increase, and the logistics sector is not an exception. Keep reading and discover how automation and Artificial Intelligence are changing logistics and supply chains globally.

Today, the logistics sector is in a good moment. Online commerce continues to boom and is part of worldwide economic reactivation. This panorama requires the digitization of processes to meet the growing demand for products and services.

We must consider the energy crisis and the concern to reduce the carbon footprint and stop the greenhouse effect. At this point, new technologies such as automation and Artificial Intelligence play a fundamental role, since by using them, it is possible to eliminate tasks or avoid repetitive or unnecessary actions, thus improving the production chain and contributing to a sustainable world.

According to “2024 Warehousing Vision”, a survey by Zebra Technologies, by 2024, automation will improve worker performance rather than replace it. It also indicates that 71% of the managers surveyed plan to enable partial automation or increase the workforce with technology in the warehouse. Likewise, they anticipate the use of robots for managing incoming inventory (24%), outgoing packaging (22%), and merchandise (20%).

Estimates that more than half of the manufacturing sector is aware of this digital phenomenon globally, which is why they are already migrating towards technological innovation models to improve their processes and logistics operations.

However, this digital transformation process includes particular challenges where the priority is to optimize supply chain processes to meet the growing demand of customers.

The world prepares for intelligent logistics.

The adoption of these technologies in the logistics sector does not go backward. On the contrary, according to US Market Transparency Research, the management software market of the supply chain will grow 11.2 percent from today to 2026, directly related to the demand increase for products and services and the need to optimize processes and supply chains.

Nowadays, some companies have not waited and already live in an automated environment. Such is the case of Amazon, which has a plant in Spain that uses robots and robots that take care of tasks such as storage, material arrangement, pick and place, arrangement of merchandise, etc.

On the other hand, Artificial Intelligence is already being used in the logistics sector and not only in companies, causing positive results that only data analysis and information gathering can provide.

Thanks to the implementation of digital platforms, it is possible to track merchandise and transport and view inventory and synchronize it automatically to optimize operations and make real-time strategic decisions.

As you can see, this digitization is inevitable and necessary to transform the logistics sector and align with the wave of digital innovation that is being globally experienced. In the same way, it must be considered that it is not enough to implement these technologies randomly: a whole process must be carried out that must not be counterproductive and endanger the operation and the mentioned supply chains involved.
